Function

Responsible for the deacetylation of lysine residues on the N-terminal part of the core histones (H2A, H2B, H3 and H4). Histone deacetylation gives a tag for epigenetic repression and plays an important role in transcriptional regulation, cell cycle progression and developmental events. Histone deacetylases act via the formation of large multiprotein complexes (By similarity). Plays a central role in microtubule-dependent cell motility via deacetylation of tubulin. Involved in the MTA1-mediated epigenetic regulation of ESR1 expression in breast cancer.

Summary

The histone deacetylase (HDAC) family contains multiple members which are divided into four classes. Class II of the HDAC family comprises six members, HDAC4, 5, 6, 7, 9 and 10, each of which appear to have tissue-specific roles (1). HDAC6 contains an internal duplication of two catalytic domains which appear to function independently of each other (2). HDAC6 has been shown to be part of the microtubule network and acts as a specific alpha-tubulin deacetylase, and has been suggested to be a potential therapeutic target in neurodegenerative disease (3).
