Function |
Receptor for thyrotropin-releasing hormone. This receptor is mediated by G proteins which activate a phosphatidylinositol-calcium second messenger system.
Summary |
Thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH; MIM 275120), a smallneuropeptide, is widely distributed throughout the central andperipheral nervous system as well as in extraneural tissues. Thepeptide is synthesized in the hypothalamus and transported by theportal vascular system to the anterior pituitary where it acts onthyrotropic and lactotropic cells to promote secretion of TSH andprolactin, respectively. Thyrotropin-releasing hormone receptor isa G protein-coupled receptor that activates the inositolphospholipid-calcium-protein kinase C transduction pathway upon thebinding of TRH. The TRHR gene is expressed in the thyrotrope cellsof the anterior pituitary.
