Thought to form a receptor-activated non-selective calcium permeant cation channel. Probably is operated by a phosphatidylinositol second messenger system activated by receptor tyrosine kinases or G-protein coupled receptors. Seems to be also activated by intracellular calcium store depletion.

TRPC1 belongs to the transient receptor potential (TRP)superfamily of cation channels. TRP cation channels are involved indiverse physiologic processes, including receptor- andstore-operated Ca(2+) entry, mineral absorption, and cell death.They also function as sensors for pain, heat, cold, sound, stretch,and osmotic changes (Zhang et al., 2009 [PubMed19193631]).
