Function

Binds LDL, the major cholesterol-carrying lipoprotein of plasma, and transports it into cells by endocytosis. In order to be internalized, the receptor-ligand complexes must first cluster into clathrin-coated pits. In case of HIV-1 infection, functions as a receptor for extracellular Tat in neurons, mediating its internalization in uninfected cells.

Summary

Low density lipoprotein receptors (LDLR) are cell surface glycoproteins that regulate LDL cholesterol by scavenging LDL from the blood. LDLR is characterized by a cluster of cysteine-rich class A repeats, EGF-like repeats, the O-linked s μgars domain and six YWTD or class B repeats. Mutations in the LDLR gene cause autosomal dominant disease such as familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) and atherosclerosis.
