Function	Signal-transducing molecule. The receptor systems for IL6, LIF, OSM, CNTF, IL11, CTF1 and BSF3 can utilize gp130 for initiating signal transmission. Binds to IL6/IL6R (alpha chain) complex, resulting in the formation of high-affinity IL6 binding sites, and transduces the signal. Does not bind IL6. May have a role in embryonic development (By similarity). The type I OSM receptor is capable of transducing OSM-specific signaling events.
Summary	The protein encoded by this gene is a signal transducershared by many cytokines, including interleukin 6 (IL6), ciliaryneurotrophic factor (CNTF), leukemia inhibitory factor (LIF), andoncostatin M (OSM). This protein functions as a part of thecytokine receptor complex. The activation of this protein isdependent upon the binding of cytokines to their receptors. vIL6, aprotein related to IL6 and encoded by the Kaposi sarcoma-associatedherpesvirus, can bypass the interleukin 6 receptor (IL6R) anddirectly activate this protein. Knockout studies in mice suggestthat this gene plays a critical role in regulating myocyteapoptosis. Alternatively spliced transcript variants encodingdistinct isoforms have been described. A related pseudogene hasbeen identified on chromosome 17.

APR03528G staining CD130 in Human skeletal muscle tissue sections by Immunohistochemistry (IHC-P - paraformaldehyde-fixed, paraffin-embedded sections). Tissue was fixed with formaldehyde and blocked with 3% BSA for 0. 5 hour at room temperature; antigen retrieval was by heat mediation with a citrate buffer (pH6). Samples were incubated with primary antibody (1/25) for 1 hours at 37°C. A undiluted biotinylated goat polyvalent antibody was used as the secondary antibody.
