Function |
Antigen-presenting protein that binds self and non-self lipid and glycolipid antigens and presents them to T-cell receptors on natural killer T-cells.
Summary |
This gene encodes a member of the CD1 family oftransmembrane glycoproteins, which are structurally related to themajor histocompatibility complex (MHC) proteins and formheterodimers with beta-2-microglobulin. The CD1 proteins mediatethe presentation of primarily lipid and glycolipid antigens of selfor microbial origin to T cells. The human genome contains five CD1family genes organized in a cluster on chromosome 1. The CD1 familymembers are thought to differ in their cellular localization andspecificity for particular lipid ligands. The protein encoded bythis gene localizes to late endosomes and lysosomes via atyrosine-based motif in the cytoplasmic tail, and requiresvesicular acidification to bind lipid antigens.
