Function |
Neurofilaments usually contain three intermediate filament proteins: L, M, and H which are involved in the maintenance of neuronal caliber.
Summary |
Neuofilaments (NF) are members of the intermediate filament protein family also known as 10nm filaments. These neuron-specific filaments are the major constituents of the axonal cytoskeleton (1). NFs are composed of three major proteins; NF-H, NF-L and NF-M and the ratio of each protein changes during neuronal development. NF-H is the heavy molecular weight protein (200 kDa), NF-M the medium (160 kDa) and NF-L the light protein (68kDa) (2). NF-L self polymerizes and provides a scaffold for NFs to form via cross-bridging with NF-H or NF-M (3). NF-L aggregation has been linked to the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative disease, such as degradation of motor neurons (4).
