Summary |
Trefoil factor 1 (TFF1), a member of the trefoil factor family, is a stabilizer of the mucous gel overlying the gastrointestinal mucosa that provides a physical barrier against various noxious agents (1). It belongs to a family of abundant GI3 peptides with a distinct 3-loop structure formed by a highly conserved motif of cysteine disulfide bonds, which confer them with luminal stability (2). TFF peptides, closely associated with mucins, are mainly synthesized and secreted by mucin-secreting epithelial cells lining the gastrointestinal tract (3). It is specifically found in the stomach, with highest expression levels in the upper gastric mucosal cells (1). TFF1 is most strongly expressed in pancreas, large bowel, and breast cancer (1). In breast cancer, its regulation by estrogen is an indicator of estrogen receptor (ER) functionality (4).
