Function |
Galactose-specific lectin which binds IgE. May mediate with the alpha-3, beta-1 integrin the stimulation by CSPG4 of endothelial cells migration. Together with DMBT1, required for terminal differentiation of columnar epithelial cells during early embryogenesis (By similarity). In the nucleus: acts as a pre-mRNA splicing factor. Involved in acute inflammatory responses including neutrophil activation and adhesion, chemoattraction of monocytes macrophages, opsonization of apoptotic neutrophils, and activation of mast cells.

Summary |
Galectins are a family of beta-galactoside-binding animal lectins that are associated with diverse cellular events, including immune response. Glectin-3 has previously been identified in rat, mouse and human tissues and is evolutionarily highly conserved. It is an abundant cell-surface component of inflammatory macrophages and their major non-integrin laminin-binding protein. It is also mainly expressed in colonic epithelial cells. Galectin-3 is a cell surface receptor of the advanced glycosylation end products (AGE), which has involvement in the pathogenesis of nephropathy and other diabetic complications (1-2).
