Function |
Converts arachidonate to prostaglandin H2 (PGH2), a committed step in prostanoid synthesis. Constitutively expressed in some tissues in physiological conditions, such as the endothelium, kidney and brain, and in pathological conditions, such as in cancer. PTGS2 is responsible for production of inflammatory prostaglandins. Up-regulation of PTGS2 is also associated with increased cell adhesion, phenotypic changes, resistance to apoptosis and tumor angiogenesis. In cancer cells, PTGS2 is a key step in the production of prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), which plays important roles in modulating motility, proliferation and resistance to apoptosis.

Summary |
COX2 (Cyclooxygenase-2. PGHS2) is an inducible dimeric enzyme belonging to prostaglandin G/H synthase family. COX2, similar to COX1, functions to form prostaglandins by catalyzing the synthesis of cyclic endoperoxides from arachidonic acid. COX2 expression is induced by lipopolysaccaride (LPS) and peptoglycan (PGN) and is highly expressed in activated marcophages. It has been implicated as a mediator of inflammation and a possible role in prostanoid signaling in activity-dependent plasticity (1). COX2 is considered as an ideal marker in immune response regulation studies and a therapeutic target against inflammatory diseases (2).
