Summary |
CGA belongs to the glycoprotein hormone alpha chain family that includes the alpha subunit of chronic gonadotropin (CG), lutenizing hormone (LH), follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), and thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH). The glycoprotein hormones have the most complex chemical structures of the classical protein hormones. They are dimers consisting of alpha and beta subunits that are associated noncovalently (1, 4). The alpha subunit is common to all of the hormones; however, their beta chains are unique and confer biological specificity (1). These hormones are central to the complex endocrine system that regulates normal growth, sexual development, and reproductive function (2). The hormones LH, FSH and TSH are secreted by the anterior pituitary gland, while CG is secreted by the placenta (3).
